Welcome to Upper School

libpanorama:

There are 262 pupils in this part of the school of whom 58% are boys. During any week, approximately 25% of pupils experience boarding on a full, weekly or part-time basis. The maximum class-size is 18. Classes in Year 8 have an average size of 16 pupils. In Year 7 the average is 15; and in Years 5 and 6 it is 17. For a number of subjects the pupils are taught in sets rather than in class-groups.

There are four year-groups: Year 5 (10-year-olds); Year 6 (11-year-olds); Year 7 (12-year-olds) and Year 8 (13-year-olds). These are National Curriculum year-groups. In Year 8 there is a top set for the academically more-able pupils, a second set, and two parallel forms, each of mixed ability. In Year 7 there is setting in English, Maths, French, Geography, History and Latin. In Year 6 there is setting in English, Maths, French and Latin, and setting in Maths in Year 5. For other subjects the pupils are taught in form groups.

The curriculum builds on the foundations laid in Lower School, and follows broadly the requirements of the National Curriculum. Pupils are prepared for entry into any school of their parents’ choice, either through Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations or by tests set by their future schools. The school is particularly proud of its excellent scholarship record. In the last three years our pupils have won a total of 76 scholarships and exhibitions.
