Redevelopment of Lower School
After 9 months' construction activity, the new Lower School (Little Stream) is now an established part of our environment and much of the main classroom and hall building is complete and roofed. With only seven months to go until occupation, a great deal of work is still to be done and, during the February half term we will be handing over a significant part of the existing Lower School to the contractor so that construction of the main entrance, offices, library, art, science and IT rooms can commence. As a result 2 form rooms and the music and science rooms are having to be relocated into temporary classrooms for the remainder of the School year. Despite the magnitude of the task ahead, and in spite of the weather, construction remains on schedule for completion in July. The Summer holiday will then see the demolition and removal of the bulk of the old building, and the creation of the new vehicle entrance and drive in its place. There will also be a considerable amount of fitting out and finishing to be done to the interior of the new building and a new joint Nash House/Little Stream Staff Room to be formed in what is now the 1P form room in Nash House. Disruption to normal School life by the project has been kept to a minimum and our contractors have made every effort to be as discrete and unobtrusive as possible. This has not always been easy on a building of this scale, but so far they have done remarkably well and will, we are sure, continue to do their best. We have now taken delivery of our new woodchip boiler system for the building and so will be making a significant reduction in our overall carbon footprint from next Autumn. Despite the additional capital cost of this form of heating installation, the running costs should be lower than gas and our need for woodchip as fuel will, we hope, help encourage the maintenance and proper management of local woodlands and thus contribute to the local economy. We hope to set an example to other school developments in the South East and are pleased that our efforts have been acknowledged in the form of a Carbon Trust grant which has helped us to make the investment possible.
