Upper School Library

A Library is more than just a collection of books. It is a place to read, to reflect, to think and to be quiet. At DCPS, we are incredibly lucky to have such a beautiful Library, a spacious, airy room in which it is a pleasure to be. There are areas in which to relax, to browse and others in which you can work purposefully, uninterrupted. The wall displays are a joy - if everything else palls, you can look at the Reading Tree to see which books other people (and the staff) enjoy, or admire the professionalism of the book jacket display.

There are always new books to tempt and old favourites to go back to again and again. There is the chance to meet real authors - we have had Michael Morpurgo, Anthony Horowitz, Jacqueline Wilson and Gillian Cross, to name but the most recent - and, although the Library is primarily a quiet area, the excitement generated by having the room packed with eager children, discussing their favourite books, turns the Library into an exciting place, buzzing with enthusiasm and shared reading experiences. Of all my responsibilities, the Library is the most enjoyable. Given a choice, I would happily spend all day there, curled up in an armchair, transported to Lowood School, or Starkadder Farm or the coast of Bohemia. As it is, I can only share my enthusiasm and welcome you to our Library.

Fiona Hicks-Beach
Head of English

The Upper School Library is always open to pupils.  It contains many fiction and reference books as well as an increasing selection of talking books.  There are 15 PCs, magazines, newspapers and chess sets.

WORLD BOOK DAY 2006

Year 4 came to the Upper School LIbrary to share their favourite books with children from Years 7 and 8.  Our Librarian, Mrs Booth, went to Lower School to talk to Years 2 and 3 about books and Ms Hicks-Beach, Head of English, took Assembly in Nash House.  All the children were given book tokens.

LIBRARY COMPETITION

Our Librarian, Mrs Booth, often organises Library Competitions.  In a recent competition, children were asked to make book characters out of wooden pegs.  Some examples of the wonderful entries can be seen below:
