Religious Studies is taught throughout the school, by form teachers at Nash House and Lower School and by the Head of Department and the Lay Chaplain in Upper School.

Religious Studies provides opportunities for pupils to:

  • develop their knowledge and understanding of, and their ability to respond to, Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain
  • explore issues within and between faiths to help them understand and respect different religions, beliefs, values and traditions and understand the influence of these on individuals, societies, communities and cultures
  • consider questions of meaning and purpose in life
  • learn about religious and ethical teaching, enabling them to make reasoned and informed judgments on religious and moral issues
  • develop their sense of identity and belonging, preparing them for life as citizens in a plural society
  • develop skills of enquiry and response in analysis, expression, reflection, evaluation and application

The primary aim of the Religious Studies department at DCPS is to provide these opportunities and to encourage the spiritual development of each individual pupil.

Religious Studies is one of the subjects at the 13+ Common Entrance Examination and therefore the Common Entrance syllabus provides the framework and rationale behind much of the work of the department.

It is a popular subject at Dulwich for providing pupils with an opportunity to think through and express their opinions and often challenge the accepted norm.
